Jungle Road Sequence

The Jungle Road sequence is a portfolio of photographs created during the last thirteen years on the big island of Hawaii.  Each of the photographs in the sequence is intended to be experienced as a stanza in a poem, or as an “equivalent” as defined by Alfred Stieglitz.  The opening images are from the  tropical rainforest areas north of Hilo.  The images in the sequence continue south through the dense rainforest toward the Kilauea Volcano where the sequence concludes.  On one level the intent of the portfolio is to illustrate the transition from the intense botanical energy of the tropical rainforest, north of Hilo, to the energy generated from within the earth at Kilauea Volcano to the south.  From a metaphorical perspective some viewers have understood the sequence to be analogous to the changes of energy within the human body during the process of aging.  Others have viewed it as another illustration of a wilderness area endangered by development and climate change.
